| Early coal mining was not restricted to the Coal Branch. The Community of Pocahontas in Jasper National Park was an early operation. Nearby was the mining community of Brule. The Drinnan Mine was also operating near Hinton. Mining at Grande Cache was slow to develop, although prospecting in the area was underway in the 1920's and 30's. In addition to the coal mines, a short lived gold mine was operated near Peers, east of Edson in 1933. The muskeg west of Edson yielded a less glamorous but more reliable resource when the Edmonton Portland Cement plant was opened at Marlboro in 1913. A limestone quarry was opened near Cadomin in 1957 to provide raw material to Inland Cement's processing plant in Edmonton. This quarry has added to the economic diversity of the area. Today Inland Cement produces 1 million tonnes of crushed limestone annually. |
