TRAIN STATION PRESERVATION STEERING COMMITTEE

MEETING MINUTES

April 6, 2003

AGENDA:

Ø      Council Support, Town of Hinton support.

Ø      Review and adoption of previous minutes.

Ø      Purchase of Building from VIA Rail Canada.

Ø      Review old business, sites, timelines, status and funding.

Ø      Planning, Next steps (Public Strategies)

Had meeting with Dale Rhyason of Engineering & Development.  Members of the town that will be working with the committee are Dale and Jean-Ann. 

Dale recommended reviewing all sites, marking down the pluses & minuses of each.  Also have the group pick a 2nd choice. 

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

Community Lottery Board concerning grants has been extended to Oct. 31.  Letter to follow.

 

Rick Armstrong to contact Sheila Copps and Ivan Strang about the committees plans to preserve the station house.

 

Motion was made at the April 1st Council meeting.  The motion, “council will support in principle and on a non-financial basis, the committee’s effort to preserve the station.  This support will include having Town administration work with the committee to select a piece of Town land for the train station, and to start the rezoning process of the land if necessary”.

 

Hinton Web Design has developed a web site, “Hintonhistory.com” which includes information on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Station.

 

NEW BUSINESS

Send minutes of meetings to Council members.  This will be added into the information packages for council.

 

The committee reviewed 12 possible sites for the station, listing the pluses and minuses of each.  A possible 2nd choice will be selected at the next meeting.

 

Plan to have a meeting with the Economic Development Committee.

 

Attend the Arts Council meeting in May, as well as other groups to inform that of the project.

 

A Channel has contacted Lorraine about doing a story on the station.  A date has not been set up.

 

Chamber of Commence has offered a space in the building on the Green Square to display town history as well as the committee’s plans for preserving the station.
