Review of minutes from March 18 - Passed.

 

Reviewed $5,000.00 grant for roofing that can be reinstated by Alberta Historical Resources Foundation.

Lorraine read letter of support from Hinton Training Centre manager, R. Thorborn.

Lorraine read letter of support from the Historical Foundation president, C. Thomas.

Discussion from VIA Rail Canada about purchasing the building by April 15, 2003.  VIA will work with the committee in developing a timeline of up to 6 months to have the building moved off the CN site.

 

Lottery board monies - April 10 is the dead line for applications.  The group is to proceed with applications for funding - Lorraine to contact Community Lottery Board concerning the grants of $10,000.00 and $15,594.00 that are in place with the Historical Foundation.

 

Discussion about the past Sq. Foot project for raising money.

 

Group was advised to e-mail Sheila Copps and contact the MLA Ivan Strang, Gene Zwozdesky and Town council members – Judy Blakely-Tetz, Brent Bish, and Alex Galbraith.  Recommended to sit down with these council members to discuss the project and help in understanding what is needed from the GTPR Station group.

 

This project may also be entitled to support from the Alberta Centennial Legacies initiatives.

 

Art Council is in support of this project and will draft letter of support - Don Doherty.

 

Discussion about the site - motion for re-zoning will have to be made at the council meeting.  Administration will then review the town plan. 

 

Group recommended the Town of Hinton council draft up a letter of support for the GTPR Station House project, motion to be made at next council meeting April 1.  The group also asked where this project will fall under for support, and asked Town of Hinton council for "Support and partnership with the different groups in the Town to work with the GTPR Station House project.  Letter to be drafted and forward to Hinton Town council.

 

Once the building is in place, Ian Duncan mentioned that money would be available for marketing.

 

Coal Branch re-union is this year, mention of having a drawing of the GTPR Station House made in pen/ink for display during the re-union.  Also asking for donations.

 

Hinton Web design .com - has Hinton's History on line.  Discussions about adding this project to the web site for support.

            April 1 - Council Meeting.

            April 10 - Community Lottery Board for grants.

            April 15 - VIA Rail Canada.

                Train Station Preservation Steering Committee, (TSPSC).

 

GOALS: - to prevent station building from being demolition.

            - to preserve historical integrity and promote the future use of the station.

            - to partner with community groups

 

STRATEGIES:

        1  - to acquire station and land 

            - to move on to lot.

 

        2  - to identify funding needs.

            - to pursue funding opportunities with grant application / transfer of existing funds. 

            - to plan fund raising activities. 

 

        3  - document and promote as Hinton's "oldest" building.

            - restore with guidance from historical resource adviser. 

            - encourage use as educational, interpretive centre. 

            - speak to community groups to promote the project.
