Hinton GTP Railway Station Preservation Society
A group of local preservation and train buffs have joined together to form a society for the preservation of the historic Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Station House (1911-12) in Hinton. Hinton was named for William Putnam Hinton GTPR General Passenger Agent and later Vice-president and General Manager of the GTPR and we are "Hinton Proud". The GTPR station house is the oldest building in Hinton and at this time is still used by VIA Rail Canada as a passenger depot. VIA Rail Canada has offered the building to our group for $1.00 and community support is overwhelming to save this building. This project is vital to the preservation of our local history and the history of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the Canadian Northern Railway and CN Rail through our area of westcentral Alberta. The committee has developed a plan for the restoration and preservation of this Municipal Historic Building (declared by Hinton Town Council 1999). The plan includes a proposed relocation site located across the highway from the present site, preservation of the building and partnering for future use of the building for historical interpretation. Alberta's Centennial Legacy Celebrations in 2005 will coincide with the completion of the restoration and renovation of the station house and Hinton will have it's own "legacy" to preserve our past, to present it to residents and visitors to our area.
